He was raised in Mott, ND, and graduated from Mott Lincoln High School and the Bismarck State College auto-body technician program. Gary married the love of his life, Marlys Hochhalter, on August 24, 1985, in New Leipzig, ND. Gary and Marlys made their home in Bismarck and welcomed sons, Brett in 1990 and Britton in 1994. Gary worked as an auto body tech at Stan Puklich Chevrolet. Gary and Marlys moved to Fort Collins, CO, for a few months but moved back to Bismarck where they started their family and Gary started a 21 year career at Melroe/Bobcat. In 2013, Gary became co-owner of Western Edge Heating and Air where he worked until the time of his passing. Gary was a member of the St. Anne's KC Council. He loved his family very much and enjoyed great times with them, especially at their lake home at Wolf Creek.
