Elias G. Doughty was born November 19, 1821 in Gloucester County. He moved to Millville when he was 7 years old, where he worked in the furnace. He acquired an English Education. He then learned the trade of molder, which he pursued vigorously for twelve years. On leaving the furnace, he purchased the Stage-Line running from Philadelphia to Millville, NJ, which he successfully conducted for fifteen years. On May 27, 1843, he married Miss Harriet M.C. Tice, daughter of Daniel and Lydia Tice, of Millville. Together, they had four children: John F., Beulah, Elbridge G. and Daniel W. Harriet died of Tuberculosis on April 20, 1858. Two of the children, Daniel and Elbridge, were then sent to live with their grandparents on the farm in Bridgeton. He remarried on October 29, 1873, Mrs. Elmira H. Lord, daughter of Col. Michael Hays of Burlington Co., NJ. In June 1866 Judge Doughty moved to Vineland as agent of the West Jersey Railroad. He was the forth mayor of Vineland (1884-1885). He was an active worker in the ranks of the Democracy and the recipient of many honors. Elias went on to become a freeholder and member of the legislature. Elias served as a freeholder of Landis Township, and in 1857 elected member of the State Legislature. When he was appointed to the Committee on Corporations, he passed bills and started an Insane Asylum. He served five terms as associate judge of the Cumberland County Court. Elias was a member of the Masonic fraternity and associated with Shekinah Lodge, No. 58, of Millville. Judge Doughty was educated in the faith of the Methodist Episcopal Church as were his parents. He died on September, 7, 1887, at age 91 and is buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery (tall stone with urn on top). Elmira, his second wife, died January 17, 1912.
