Of the eight children of Johannes Anton Anhorn (1847-1932) and his second wife Christina Stadel (1857-1918), Chris and his sister Otillia (1896-1922) were the youngest and the only ones born in the U.S. The couple had emigrated from Beresina, Bessarabia (South Russia) in April of 1894, arriving at Ellis Island on April 12 on the ship Spree from Bremen.

By 1924, Chris owned the Johnson Hotel (Manfred Hotel) in Manfred, ND, and he established a lunch counter and pool hall there. By 1930, he had moved to Ashley ND, where he met and married Marion Isabel Johnson (1905-1978). From 1937 to 1943, Chris was business manager of the State Tuberculosis Sanatorium in San Haven, ND. Their first child, Christal Audrey, was born there in 1935. About 1943, the family moved to Wells County, where their second child, John Christopher, was born in 1945, and they farmed near Manfred on the home farm that had belonged to Chris's father Johannes Anhorn until Chris' retirement from farming, at which point they moved to a home in Fessenden.

Note: Chris (also known as Christ) was not given a middle name but as an adult chose E as a middle initial.
