Mr. Holderman was born in Ohio November 23, 1840. He came to Kansas territory in 1858, settling near the old trading post in Linn County. He was an active member of the Free Soil party and a follower of John Brown. He enlisted in the Sixth Kansas volunteer cavalry in 1862 and served three years during the war, being discharged in Duvall Bluff, Ark. August 10, 1864. About a year before his discharge from the army he was captured by the Confederates in a surprise attack at Mazzard Prairie, Ark., when the Sixth Kansas lost 115 men. He was taken to Tyler, Tex., and imprisoned but escaped and made his way north to his command after escaping bloodhounds and suffering terrible trials. In 1866 Mr. Holderman married Miss Mary Covel at Denmark, Ia., and shortly afterward they came to Chetopa, near which place they have lived since, occupying what is known as the Holderman ranch, southwest of town. Of recent years Mr. Holderman has been in ill health and has been at the military home.
