Sudden Death of a Popular Young Lady
The sudden death on Saturday forenoon last of Miss Martina Snedden, only surviving daughter of Mr. Wm. Snedden of Pakenham township, has evoked the deepest sympathy of the whole community for the mourning parents and brothers of the deceased young lady. Miss Snedden took ill with pneumonia on Saturday, 29th April, and on the following Friday, with careful nursing and the aid of medical skill, she had recovered to such an extant that the relatives anticipated her early restoration to complete health; but (alas for human expectations!) on Friday night she took a sudden turn for the worse, and at ten 'clock next day the spark of life went out. Miss Snedden's gentle demeanour and winning manner had endeared her to all with whom she came in contact, and the news of her sudden demise carried sorrow to hundreds of homes. Mr and Mrs Snedden have been repeatedly bereaved of their children, this being the fifth death on their family of ten children, all having grown to years of maturity. In our human blindness we cannot understand why lives so full of promise should be so early taken. The great Disposer of events says: "What I do thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter." The prayer of a multitude of hearts is that the mourning ones may be given divine grace to bear the affliction sent upon them. Miss Snedden's funeral took place on Monday afternoon and was one of the largest ever seen in the neighbourhood, the cortege being close on a mile in length. The service at the house was conducted by Rev J.M. McLean, who in a short but touching address spoke in the highest terms of praise of the deceased for her many fine qualities. He said his congregation at Blakeney would sadly miss her, as she took a warm interest in church work and in everything that tended to build up the Lord's kingdom on earth. The remains were interred in the eighth line cemetery.
