John was born in Georgia in 1816, but since we have no knowledge of his parents, our family knows almost nothing of his early life. We do know that John's family moved to Burke county, Georgia when he was fourteen.
The next time we find John, at the age of twenty four, he is in Cilbon county. Alabama, where he marries Marie Hannah McCrelis on November 5, 1840. By 1846, John has moved his family to Tallapoosa county, Alabama. By then, the couple has two sons. DeKalb was born on August 3, 1844, but we are not sure whether his family was still in Cilbon county, or had already moved to Tallapoosa county by the time of his birth. DeKalb was killed in the Civil War.
John and Marie's second son, Jasper, was born on October 13, 1846, In Tallapoosa county, Alabama, and died in Union Parish, Louisiana on December 24, 1927.
Marie was born in Cilbon county on December 28, 1821, and died in Walnut Hill, Tallapoosa, Alabama on March 26, 1855.
John married his second wife, Penelope Rennie Simmons, on June 10, 1855, and they had four children: Newton, August 30, 1856-June 11, 1857: Quintina, born December 24, 1857; Nancy, April 24, 1859-December 4, 1946; and Cyrus September 2, 1880-February 2, 1948. John died in 1902, in Walnut Hill, Tallapoosa, Alabama.
Family tradition indicates that he (and perhaps other members of his family) was buried on his property in Walnut Hill.
We have developed a deep love for John through all of our struggles to discover his family and their history-to the point that we named our youngest son John Michael "after" him (Not knowing that his middle name was "Morgan" until very recently) so he is affectionately called "Johnny Mike" in our family. It is our fondest prayer that one of you may know of his parents, so that we will finally, after thirty years of searching, be able to continue his line.
