U.S. Congressman. Born in Rochester, New Hampshire, he was a successful printer, a member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives, (1857-58) and a United States Marshal, (1861-66). In 1867, he was elected as a Republican to the Fortieth and Forty-first Congresses, serving until 1871. After his term, President Grant appointed him Auditor of the Treasury for the US Post Office Department in 1872, which he served until his death at 64 in Washington D.C.
