U.S. Congressman. Moving to Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1828, he learned about printing at the University Press and established the Cambridge Press Newspaper in 1835. Returning to Rhode Island, in 1842, he engaged in banking at Woonsocket, in 1850, helped in the organization of the Republican Party in 1856 and was a delegate to the Republican National Convention at Philadelphia, in 1872. In 1875, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fourth, Forty-fifth and Forty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1881. Declining to be a candidate fro reelection, he resumed his previous business interests until his death at age 88.
