Richard H. "Dick" Maurer

Funeral services for Richard H. "Dick" Maurer Sr., 83, will be held in Norfolk, Va. with burial in Pine Grove Cemetery in Berwick, Pa.

At the time of his death he was living in Auburn to be close to his son, Richard H. Maurer II. Mr. Maurer was the son of Lorenzo G. Maurer and Mary Eleanor Bentz.

Dick Maurer, a native of Berwick, Pennsylvania, joined the Navy in October, 1939 and enjoyed over 30 years of service to his country. He advanced quickly and reached the rank of Chief Petty Officer in just four years, an incredibly short period of time. He served on the flagships Texas, Augusta, Constellation, Vixen and Pocono. One of Mr. Maurer's most notable achievements was recognized in 1966 on the 25th anniversary of the creation of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. At that time, Mr. Maurer had served on the staff of the commander in chief, Atlantic Fleet under nine of the 12 admirals to have held the position. On Feb. 1, 1966, Mr. Maurer met with Admiral Thomas H. Moorer, then commander in chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, and recalled the events of Feb. 1, 1941, the day the U.S. Atlantic Fleet was created. The meeting with Admiral Moorer was covered by local media and chronicled in the Virginian Pilot. Mr. Maurer was twice awarded the Navy Commendation Medal and prior to his retirement in 1969, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for outstanding meritorious service while serving as Assistant Flag Secretary on the staff of Commander Service Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. He retired in the grade of Chief Warrant Officer-4.

Following his career in the Navy, Mr. Maurer worked for four years for Virginia National Bank. In retirement, Mr. Maurer was very active in the Tidewater Rose Society and often lectured on how to raise award-winning roses. Over the years, he was a member of the following organizations: Retired Officers Association of Hampton Roads, American Rose Society, Fleet Reserve Association, Disabled American Veterans (Chapter 21), Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation and Christ United Methodist Church Methodist Men.

Mr. Maurer is survived by his brother, Arthur; a son, Richard. H. Maurer II; and a grandson, Kurt R. Maurer.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Association.

Fredericks Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
