Al (Doc), (Yogi) J. Cihocki has left the field and is again with his loving wife of 64 years, Marie.

He passed this Thursday, March 27, 2014.

Born in Nanticoke, Al was a baseball player. He played sandlot ball with his cousins, Steve Bilko and Pete Gray. Notable teams he started on in the 1940s and 1950s were Batavia, N.Y.; Coast Guard; Curtis Bay, Md.; the Cleveland Indians; the Baltimore Orioles; Bismarck, N.D.; Albuquerque, N.M.; San Antonio, Texas; San Juan and Mayaguez, Puerto Rico; Caracas, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic. Notables: 1945 played the infield with Lou Boudreau, Cleveland Indians. He was the Baltimore Orioles "Ironman" from 1946 to 1952, playing 850 games, which were the most of any Minor League Oriole. As a player/manager, he led Bismarck, N.D., to two league championships. Al retired from professional baseball in 1955 and coached baseball in Luzerne County. He assisted Steve Bilko with the Kings College team and was head coach for 22 years at Luzerne County Community College. In addition, he retired from Chase Prison, Dallas, Pa.

He is survived by his sister, Margie Griffith; four sons: Albert, David, Richard and James; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be Monday, March 31, at the Earl W. Lohman Funeral Home Inc., 14 W. Green St., Nanticoke, from 10 a.m. until noon. Interment will be at St. Faustina/Holy Trinity Cemetery, Sheatown.
