LOOGOOTEE - Benjamin W. Summers, 79, died at 7:35 a.m. Monday at his home following a lengthy illness.
Born Oct. 17, 1927, in Loogootee, he was the son of Alvin J. and Clara M. (Gootee) Summers.
He was a graduate of Loogootee High School and Lockyear Business College. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the Loogootee American Legion. A retired cost accountant with U.S. Gypsum, he was a member of St. John Catholic Church. He was an avid woodworker and was a fire fighter and former assistant fire chief with the Loogootee Fire Department. He was a member of the Martin County Emergency Unit and was a life member of the Indiana Volunteer Fire Fighters Association. In April 2000 he received the Governor?s Meritorious Service Award from the Indiana State Fire Marshall and in January 2000 he received a service award from the City of Loogootee for over 50 years of service as a fire fighter.
He is survived by his wife, Camilla (Strange) Summers, whom he married Jan. 21, 1950; two sons, Benjamin E. and Wayne Summers, both of Loogootee; three daughters, Beverly J. Moore of Bedford, Jennie Boyd of Avoca, and Rachel A. Terry of Shoals; 10 grandchildren, Michele Phillips, Stephanie Powell, Kevin Fuhrman, Jeff Fuhrman, Michael Summers, Leslie Guy, Erin Like, Joe Kern, Matthew Summers and Heather Summers; and 11 great-grandchildren.
One infant son, William Joseph Summers, and two sisters, Catherine Faust and Elizabeth Richardson, are deceased.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. John Catholic Cemetery with graveside rites conducted by the American Legion and V.F.W.
Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Brocksmith Funeral Home, Loogootee, with a memorial service at 6:30 p.m. conducted by local and area fire fighters.
