Josiah Richardson was the sixth of eight children born to Benjamin and Mary Ann (Welch) Richardson. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Josiah enlisted 17 September 1861 and was mustered in the following day at St. Charles IL as a Corporal in Company L, Illinois 8th Cavalry. He was promoted to Sergeant and on 18 September 1863, he left the 8th Cavalry to command Company A of the 8th Regiment Colored Infantry. During the course of the war he was wounded three times, the last wound to his thigh near Richmond. He returned home after the war disabled, having achieved the rank of Captain, rejoined his old regiment and was mustered out in 1865. In 1867 he became Winnebago County Treasurer but died before completing his term in Pueblo, Mexico where he went after his health began to fail. He was buried at Greenwood Cemetery 26 February 1870. His brother-in-law J.G. Lyford completed his term.
