U.S. Congressman. Born in Noblesville, Indiana, he received an appointment to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, but soon withdrew, enlisted in the US Army and was commissioned an officer. During the Civil War, he served as a First Lieutenant in the 63rd Indiana Infantry, Union Army. Remaining in the Army, he was promoted a Captain in the 41st Regiment, US Infantry and served in Texas, (1866-69). Upon the readmission of Texas, he resigned his commission after receiving the nomination for Congress, was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-first Congress and the Forty-second Congress, serving (1870-73). Due to ill health, he was not a candidate for re-nomination and died at age 31 in Washington, D.C.
