She was the daughter of Robert Nichols and Mary TenEyck Nichols. On August 2, 1818, she married Claudius Berard at the house of Mrs. Mary Nichols. They were the parents of six daughters and one son. Children not listed below include Emily Berard and Mary Berard born about 1831. After the death of her husband in 1848 she was appointed Post Master of the United States Military Academy from May 12, 1842 to January 1877. Her daughter, Blanche Berard, became Post Master from December 11, 1871 to February 1897.
