Anne Read will always be remembered as a caring woman
IOWA CITY – Anne Read, 89, daughter, sister, mother, wife, aunt, friend, nurse, cat lover and gardener who was born May 26, 1915 in Almonte died peacefully Jan 2, 2005 in Iowa City, Iowa A gathering time for family and friends was held Jan 5, 2005 at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City. Burial will be at a later date in Almonte. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed in her name to Oaknoll Retirement Residence for the Garden Project. Caring for others with quiet dignity and graciousness was how Mrs Read led her life. This quality was reflected in the manner in which she raised her five children with Dr Charles Read and her continual concern for their welfare even through her final days. An example of this was her worry when one of her daughters came down with a nasty cold even though her own health was rapidly deteriorating. Her selflessness was also apparent in her professional work as a registered nurse. Mrs Read graduated from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, and practiced at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, Quebec in the 1930s and ‘40s. Her specialty was caring for tuberculosis patients during the epidemic that swept North America at that time. She also treated many injured and wounded servicemen in World War II. Mrs Read's strength of character and independence were of great value when she returned to nursing later in her life. She worked as a night nurse at Oaknoll Nursing Home in Iowa City for 10 years. She again demonstrated her tremendous ability to care and comforted others. One of many stories that was related about her was when a patient was terribly frightened that she was going to pass away that night. However, her mind was put at ease when she heard Anne Read was going to be on duty. In the last three months, Mrs Read returned to Oaknoll, but this time it was her turn to receive some of the care and comfort she had given over 89 years. Her family is eternally gratefully for the outstanding staff at Oaknoll that gave her so much support and peace in the last months of her life. Mrs Read was also crazy about cats and loved flowers. She had a green thumb and could make anything grow from African violets to roses. In recognition of this talent and her appreciation for the staff of Oaknoll, her family has set up a garden fund for the continued support for the courtyard project at Oaknoll. They hope this will be a place that the staff can find solace and a chance to re-energize their batteries so they can continue to provide the tremendous care to their patients. Family and friends will all miss Mrs Read very much and her children feel so fortunate that they had such a caring and thoughtful mother. Mrs Read is survived by her children: Connie (Chuck) Hippee of Solon and their children Alaine, Anna and Camilla; Judy Read (Duane) Guernsey of Halifax, Nova Scotia and their son Read Frederick; Susan (Glenn) Mazer of Toronto; Patricia Read of Naples, Florida and her children Kim and Nick Diaz; Charles (Pat) Read of Toronto; One sister, Mardi Lorimer of Terrace British Columbia. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
