Joseph McDowell was the youngest child of Col. Joseph McDowell (1758-1795) and his wife Mary Moffett (1768-1825). His paternal grandparents were "Hungting John McDowell (1724-1796) and his wife Annie Edminston (c.1730-1814), of Pleasant Gardens; and his maternal grandparents were Col. George Moffett and his wife Sarah Margaret McDowell, of Augusta County, Virginia. Apparently, Joseph was born after his father's death, and was named for him. He died at the age of 4 years, 7 months and 12 days.
