Police Search For Hawarden Murder Suspects
Authorities in Hawarden, Iowa, are looking for the suspected killers in a double-murder early Sunday morning.
They have arrest warrants for Rodolfo and Enrique Delgado Ramos. Both men are between 19 and 21 years old.
They're wanted for the shooting deaths of two young men, Jose Cruz and Alonzo Topete and for injuring Alonzo's distant relative Jesus Topete.
It all happened inside a house in Hawarden, where Cruz was living. Investigators are still trying to figure out what led to the shootings.
Meanwhile, the victim's families grieve.
Nineteen-year old Cruz has several nieces in Hawarden. They describe him as a generous person who always put family ahead of himself. Alonzo Topete lived in Hawarden for the past 12 years. And Monday we spoke with his mother, who is making funeral arrangements for her 20-year-old son.
Maria Pena fought back tears as she returned from the funeral home. And through a family member's translation, tells us she wants justice for her son.
“All I want is for the guys to be caught, the ones who murdered him. And to pay for what they did to the boys," she says.
Her son Alonzo Topete and his friend Jose Cruz were shot and killed early Sunday morning after spending the previous night in a Hawarden bar. They were hanging out with friends staying in this house.
"We really don't know what happened or why it happened," she says.
Police believe the suspected shooters, Rodolfo and Enrique Delgado Ramos, are brothers now on the run. They don't have any known family in the area, and investigators are still trying to find pictures of them to warn the public.
Pena doesn't know how her son knew the two men. But she says Topete was well-known and well-liked in Hawarden.
"The only thing I do know is that I will remember him as my son and a good boy," she says.
And she wants an explanation more than anyone.
"Everybody knew him and nobody has complained about him being in problems or anything else. He was just a quiet boy. He was just a regular boy who never did get in trouble," she says.
Jose Cruz's parents live in Mexico. Funeral services at St. Mary's church in Hawarden for the two are still pending as autopsies are done.
The third man shot, Jesus Topete, had surgery for gunshot wounds and is recovering in a Sioux City hospital.
