Bill graduated from East Texas State Teachers College in Commerce with a B.S. in Science and an M.S. in Education. He spent his life in a career in education. He taught Vocational Agriculture in Winnsboro and Kilgore and then he advanced to Houston to become the Area III Supervisor of Vocational Agriculture Teachers. Later he became the Executive Secretary for the Texas Education Agency, where he supervised both the Future Farmers of American program and the Young Farmers of Texas program at the state level. He retired from the Texas Education Agency in September, 1989.
He was a military veteran, having served in World War II.
He was an active member of Park Hills Baptist Church in Austin and devoted many volunteer hours to the Austin Baptist Soup Kitchen.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Lyons of Austin; son, David Lyons and wife Linda of Haslet; daughter, Dorann Dauphin and husband Richard of Houston; son, Billy Michael Lyons and wife Diane of Mississippi; son, Gary Mark Lyons and wife Hilda of Houston; step-daughter, Christy Morris and husband Bill of Austin. 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Dorotha Goodwin of Sherman. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel, Whitewright, Texas. Officiating the service will be Pastor Dave Bradley and Pastor Samuel Clintoc.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorials be sent to Park Hills Baptist Church - Building Fund. 900 S. MoPac Expressway, Austin, TX 78746.
