Mother of Henry Elliott Shepherd

Half sister of James Cochran Dobbin

Death of Mrs Catherine Shepherd

A telegram received in this city announces the death at Columbia, SC, Tuesday night, of Mrs Catherine Shepherd, widow of the late Judge Jesse Shepherd, of distinguished and blessed memory.

Mrs Shepherd was greatly esteemed by a wide circle of friends for her gracious charm of person and of character, and for her devout and genuine piety. Her death will be deeply regretted by all who knew her. We extend to her many relatives and friends our cordial sympathy in their hour of bereavement.

The body reached here last night at 10:19 o'clock and the funeral service was held at the Presbyterian church this morning at 11:30 o'clock.

The deceased lady was the daughter of John M Dobbin and his wife Margaret McQueen. She was a sister of John V Dobbin, who was purser on the Central America, when that ship went down with all on board about 1854. She was also a sister of Elizabeth Dobbin, wife of Richard Street, of Moore county, and a half sister of Hon James C Dobbin, Secretary of the Navy under President Franklin Pierce.

In 1842 she married Jesse George Shepherd, who was the son of a Virginian who married an Elliott of this county. After the death of Judge Shepherd's father his widow married Joel Williams, and by him she had the following children: Kate, wife of Col Kenneth Murchison, of New York, Jane E Dobbins, widow of the late John D Williams, Elizabeth Dobbins, wife of Rev S H Islar of Goldsboro, and J Marshall Williams of this county.

Mrs Shepherd, through her mother, was related to the Camerons and Sanfords, formerly very prominent citizens of this place.

She leaves the following children: Dr Henry E Shepherd of Baltimore, Margaret Shepherd Smith, wife of Henry E Smith of this county, Kate Shepherd Hill, wife of Rev Dr H G Hill of Maxton, Mary Shepherd McNeill, wife of George P McNeill of Staunton, Va, Nannie Shepherd Pell, wife of Rev Robert Pell, of Columbia, and George B Shepherd of this city.

Mrs Shepherd was modest and retiring in disposition, gentle in manner and most warmly loved by the few to whom she was well known; respected and loved by all others.
