Unfortunately, Tom left Stella after their 4th child was born. The family story goes, that he threatened to leave her, after their 3rd child, if she had a child again. Can you imagine? So either before or after Delores (their 4th child) was born, he left for Los Angeles. Stella at some point divorces him.
The children were then raised by Stella and Stella's mom, Katie McHenry. That's where they all were living, in the home of Katie, when Stella was killed in an auto accident in 1938. And not just an ordinary one. The Murray police were in a high speed pursuit of a stolen vehicle when that vehicle slammed into the vehicle driven by Stella and a friend going 85 mph. She died instantly. The story goes that it was Stella's daughter Betty that had to identify her mother's corpse at the morgue. She said she only saw her mother's foot and knew it was her.
Stella's death was a huge blow to that family, on so many levels. And then, Katie dies in just 2 years, and the kids, all teenagers, are on their own. Such were the times in Utah.
