Karen Elaine (Erickson) Palmer, 59, passed away early March 15, 2014, at University of Washington Medical Center in the presence of her husband, Roger, of Wasilla and her sister, Phyllis (Erickson) Hiebert, of Whitefish, Mont. Karen succumbed to complications following a severe heart attack and several strokes.
Karen was born to Lloyd and Gladys Erickson in the Whitefish, Mont., hospital on April 27, 1954.
Karen was the youngest of nine children and remained a spoiled, loving, independent redhead all her life.
She attended Whitefish Elementary and High School and received her GED diploma while living in Wasilla.
Karen and Roger moved to Valdez in June 1989 from the Lower 48. While they traveled to Valdez, they stopped in Canada where their daughter, Sharee, was stillborn. Roger and Karen were married in Houston on March 20, 1993. Karen and Roger moved from Anchorage to Wasilla in March 1992, where they built their home and knew they would never dream of leaving their beloved Alaska and their wonderful church family there at the Palmer Pentecostal Church in Palmer.
Their twin sons, Michael and Steven, were born into their family and currently reside with their dad at the family home in Wasilla.
The bead shop Karen operated and taught from her home for years was a source of great enthusiasm and happiness. Karen had a unique talent with those tiny glass beads and made gorgeous handwork. It allowed her to be home with her family to love and guide as moms like to do.
The fellowship Karen shared with her church family inspired her, and her "prayer warriors" were a special comfort to her during her procedures and surgeries at the hospitals recently. The family thanks you deeply for the steadfast support you provided through prayer. Karen had a beautiful voice and sang for a living at times throughout her life. In recent years, however, she made it clear that, "Now I sing for the Lord".
Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd (1987) and Gladys (1981); Glen Erickson (half brother 1988); Laura Belle (Erickson) Caswell (half sister 2011); Johnnie (brother 1938); Ron (brother 2002); and her daughter, Sharee (1989).
Karen leaves behind her husband, Roger Palmer; her two sons, Michael and Steven; brothers, Vern (Joan) in Spokane, Wash., Melvin (Misuk) in Killeen, Texas, and Roger (Diane), formerly of Wasilla (now residents of Tucson, Ariz.); sisters, Lynette Shropshire and Phyllis (Jim) Hiebert in Whitefish, Mont., June Hiebert in Missoula, Mont., and Darlene (Don) Adolfs (half sister) in Warba, Minn.
A public funeral ceremony will be held at Valley Funeral Home in Wasilla at 2 p.m., March 28. Burial will follow immediately at the Pioneer Cemetery in Palmer. A fellowship will be held at the church following burial services.
