The son of Gotlieb Zimmermann and Hannah Ulrich, "William" came to America from Leipzig, Germany in the spring of 1867. He lived in St. Louis, Missouri for a brief time before moving to Grafton, Jersey County, Illinois where he opened a blacksmith shop. He had learned the trade in Germany.

William married Pauline Schulze on 09 Dec 1868 in St. Louis, Missouri. She lived in House Springs, Missouri at that time.

William and Pauline were the parents of 11 children, although only 9 survived childhood. In 1887, William purchased a farm in Jersey County and moved there with his family. He remained on the farm for the rest of his life.

William was a member of Full Moon Lodge, A. F. and A. M. No. 341.

At the time of his death, he was 88 years, 8 months and 7 days old. Illinois death records have the place of his death recorded as Wood River Township, Illinois, but his will specifically states that he died at the Alton State Hospital in Alton.

He was survived by his wife, Pauline; 9 children; 20 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. on the afternoon of 21 Nov 1928 at the Grafton M. E. Church. Masonic rites also took place.
