Kankakee native Jean Frerichs died Sunday (Aug. 10) at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee. She was 82.

''Jean was one of a kind,'' said Daily Journal publisher Jean Alice Small. ''She was a true friend. I will miss her.''

Mrs. Frerichs was born Jean McBroom, and was the sister of State Representative Edward McBroom.

Her husband, auto dealership owner and real estate broker Wendell F. Frerichs, died in 1980. He had been a chairman of the Kankakee County Public Building Commission from 1967 until the time of his death.

They had married in 1936 in Kankakee.

Kankakeean Jeanette Diggle called Mrs. Frerichs ''one of my dear, dear friends.''

''There were six of us, three couples, who were neighbors. We became very close during the war years,'' she said. ''Jean was a very loving, giving person.''
Mrs. Frerichs had belonged to the Kankakee Country Club, the Kankakee County Historical Society, and the Trinity United Methodist Church in Kankakee.

The Rev. Martin R. Gutzmer said Mrs. Frerichs was the longest continuous member of the church, who even in the last months of her life kept busy making strawberry-rhubarb jam to give as gifts.
''She was a faithful and extremely generous donor to the church,'' he said. ''She was a very pleasant lady. She'll be greatly missed.''

Family friend Danita Grant said Mrs. Frerichs was an active crafter who had just resumed the hobby of decoupage. ''She loved antiques, crafts, baking, and politics,'' said Ms. Grant. ''She was a die-hard Republican.''

Another family friend, Secretary of State George Ryan, said this morning, ''Mrs. Ryan and I are very saddened to hear about Mrs. Frerich's death. She meant a lot to a lot of people, not only in Kankakee but throughout the state of Illinois.''
'The Ryan family's prayers go out to her family and her friends.''
