US Presidential Cabinet Secretary. From 1973 until 1974, he served as the 12th United States Secretary of Defense during the administrations of Presidents Nixon and Ford. From 1977 until 1979, he served as the 1st United States Secretary of Energy during the administration of President Jimmy Carter. Additionally, he had served as the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency in 1973. Born into a Jewish family (later converted to Lutheranism), he attained his Bachelor's Degree in Economics from Harvard University and later a Master's Degree. During the 1960s, he served as a professor of Defense Economics at the University of Virginia. This led to his association with politics, as a consultant with the White House on nuclear matters. During his tenure as Secretary of Defense, he spoke out against draft dodgers and was opposed to amnesty. He led efforts for an update nuclear weapons program. After leaving the Ford administration, Schlesinger switched affiliations to the Democratic Party and while the Secretary of Energy, he oversaw the establishment of the newly-created department. After leaving Washington, he served as a consultant in the financial industry. He died of complications from pneumonia.
