Mr. Charles Edward Oakley, age 83, of Young Harris, GA passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at his home following an extended illness. He was born May 2, 1930 to the late Roy Burton and Edna (Ensor) Oakley. As a Marine, Mr. Oakley embarked for Korea and participated in action in South and Central Korea, being assigned to a rifle team. Following his release from active duty, Charles returned to Austin Peay University where he played football and received his degree in Education. He spent 43 years teaching and coaching high school sports. For 36 years, he coached football and golf at The Lovett School in Atlanta where the football field was named for him. Charles and his wife, Grace, have been married for 59 years. He moved to this area in 2003 from Cobb County. He was predeceased by a sister, Marie Verble and brothers, Roy B. Oakley, Jr. and L. E. Oakley. Mr. Oakley was a member of First United Methodist Church in Smyrna, GA.

Survivors include his wife, Grace Oakley, of Young Harris, GA; children, Lisa and Tom Holland of Jasper, GA; Dana and Bud Ferguson of Marietta, GA; Meg Oakley of Dallas, GA; grandchildren, Michael Smith, Morgan Smith and Chase Ferguson.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. April 11, 2014 at Georgia National Cemetery with Rev. Jim Collins officiating. In lieu of flowers the family has suggested memorial contributions in Mr. Oakley's name be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
