Laura P. Stephens

Laura Patton Stephens was born November 5, 1921 in Allenton, Alabama. She departed this earth to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Sunday, March, 23, 2014.

Laura is preceded in death by her parents, Andy and Virginia Patton; husband, George Stephens; brother, David Patton; sisters, Mary Hawthorne, Priscilla Wilson, Nellie Dubose, and Irene Harris.

Laura was a faithful and active member of Allen Chapel AME Church where she served as the treasurer for Usher Board # 1 and prepared numerous meals for weddings, funerals, and church gatherings utilizing the church's kitchen. She made every pastor proud to be her pastor.

Laura was a hard worker all of her life and was never idle. She worked as a housekeeper for over 60 years for her beloved second family, the Hodnettes.

Her most important role was being a child of God who lived out the tenets stated by Jesus as recorded in Mark 12:30-31 which state "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these." She had a quick wit and a genuine love for all people. Everyone who met her immediately fell in love with her infectious smile and wonderful sense of humor. Laura was a master of making people feel so at ease that you were willing to share your deepest darkest secrets with her. She could always be counted on to listen to your problems or circumstances of life and offer hilarious, but wise counsel. She was a friend to all she met and always helped those in need whenever she could.

Laura leaves to honor her memories her loving sisters: Bell Houston and Lucille Turner, both of Pensacola, Fl; Her devoted "adopted " son; Gregory Mabry of Pensacola, Fl; Loving daughter Gladys Mathis of Tucson, Arizona; a granddaughter Joyce Mathis-Chapman; special friend Louise Lee and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Visitation will be held at Joe Morris Funeral Home on Thursday, March 27 from 6:00-7:30pm. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 28 at 9:00am at Allen Chapel AME Church. Internment will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery.
