LAKE CITY—Funeral services for Mrs. Helen Mention Alford will be held on Friday at 11:00 AM from Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church 112 Deep River Street, Lake City … and burial in Rest Lawn Cemetery directed by Green's Funeral Home.
Helen Mention Alford lived a long and generous life. She desired to be surrounded by her family when it was time for her to go to her heavenly home. Her desire was granted when she died at her home on March 21, 2014.
She was born on May 21, 1921 to the late Carrie B. Mention. At an early age she joined Wesley United Methodist Church where she served in many capacities in the church, choir, Sunday school teacher, usher, President for the Easter Sunrise Committee for more than 40 years. She received her education in the public school of Lake City. She graduated from Rosenwall Beauty College in Columbia, SC and operated Mention's Beauty Shop for a few years and later worked and retired as a factory worker. In 2003, the Lake City Chamber of Commerce honored her as a recipient of the Steel Magnolia Award. One might say that she lived her life with honor and integrity.
She was married to the late Archie Alford, Sr.
She was also preceded in her death by a sister, Bessie M. Graham.
Surviving are her children: Helen Carolina Alford, Archie (Janice) Alford, Jr., Clementine Jenkins, LaRue (Beverly) Alford all of Lake City; two grandsons reared as her own, Rico Alford and Billy (Katrece) Moody, Jr.; two sisters, Laura B. Sanders and Esther Mention of Lake City; grandchildren, great grandchildren, niece, nephew, cousins and friends.
