Elvira Mendes (died 921) , daughter of count Hermenegildo Guterres and Ermesinde Gatones, she was Queen of León. She was the first wife of King Ordoño II.
She married Ordoño II about 892 .They were the parents of:
Sancho I Ordóñez (d. 929), King of Galicia;
Alfonso IV (d. 933);
Ramiro II (d. 951), kings who were (all three) of the lion.
Jimena Ordóñez (d. after 935) .
Garcia (d. after 934)
Elvira died between 20 of February and 12 October 921. according to Chronicle of Sampiro, the King Ordoño heard of the death of his wife when he returned to Zamora victorious from some campaigns against the Muslims: "it was so much the pain felt by her death as the joy that had by triumph". Elvira was buried in the Cathedral of Oviedo.
The remains of the Queen were buried in a grave that is sheltered by a semicircular arch, in which the following epitafio: appeared sculpted
