Samuel Castle Bartholomew was born in Williston, Vt., 21 June 1801, to Levi and Rosanna (Castle) Bartholomew. His family moved to Charlotte, VT in 1804, Canada in 1805, Delhi, NY in 1809, Coventry, NY in 1810 before settling in 1814 in Clermont Co., Ohio.

He studied medicine with Dr. Bonde of Philo City, O., and Dr. Thompson of Bethel, O.; obtaining license to practice in 1830. He practiced first in Port William, Kentucky and then Ghent, Ky. In 1833 he settled in Greensburg, Ind where he married Sarah Ann Thomas in 1835. He moved to Berrien Springs in 1849 where remained until his death in 1852. He became eminently successful as a physician and surgeon.
