Merle Louise Sigmon Simmons, age 87, of Newton passed away Monday, March 24, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton. Born June 23, 1926 in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Van Sigmon. Merle was a member of New Vision Church, had worked at Southern Furniture and retired as a seamstress from the furniture industry. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 3 Brothers. She is survived by her husband Ray A. Simmons, Jr. of the home; 2 Sons, Michael Simmons and wife Carol of Newton and Tim Simmons of the home; 2 Grandsons, David Simmons of Newton and John Paul Simmons of Charlotte; 2 Sisters, Rosette Hollar of Newton and Margie Hollar of Claremont; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at New Vision Church in Conover with Dr. Frank Aichinger and Rev. Ann Aichinger officiating. Burial followed at Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory. Burke Mortuary in Newton was in charge of arrangements.
