Civil War Union Army Officer. He was mustered in as a Private in the Company A, 4th Battalion, District of Columbia Volunteer Infantry on April 11, 1861, and served until honorably mustered out on July 10, 1861.

He then joined the 14th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on July 31, 1862, when he was mustered in as a Private in Company A. He was promoted to Sergeant Major, Field and Staff on August 30, 1862, and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant of Company A on October 31, 1862.

He served at this rank for the next two years until September 1, 1864, when he was promoted to Captain, filling the command vacancy caused when Captain Henry J. Conine was killed in action at the July 9, 1862 Battle of Monocacy, Maryland. He led his company through the end of the war and was honorably mustered out June 18, 1865.

He was brevetted Lieutenant Colonel, US Volunteers, on April 2, 1865 for “for gallant and meritorious services before Petersburg, Va.”.

He filed for a US Army Invalid Veteran Pension on April 13, 1897 (Application #1189559, Certificate #945864)
