Raymond B. Baynes
Raymond Brooks Baynes, age 88, of Richmond, died Friday evening (Sept. 15, 2006) at his residence.
He was born on March 30, 1918, in Salem, Ind., to Raymond and Elizabeth Brooks Baynes and had lived in this area most of his life.
He was an Army-Air Corp veteran of World War II. He was a navigator on the B-17 Bomber and was captured and held as a prisoner of war.
He was a 1949 graduate of Hanover College and received a master's degree in 1952 from Miami University (Oxford, Ohio).
Baynes began his career as a teacher in 1938 teaching in a one-room school. He was a teacher, principal and coach for Richmond Community Schools from 1949 to 1984. He also taught math at Ivy Tech State College from 1984 to 1988. During his time in the public school system, he spent his summers painting houses. Painting became a full-time vocation after his retirement from the teaching.
He enjoyed bowling, golf and horse racing. He also enjoyed vacationing, particularly in Sanibel Island, Fla. He was a member and trustee at First Friends Meeting.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Jane Baynes; daughters, Debbie Williams of Madison, Ind., Caroline (Alan) Freedman of Tucson, Ariz.; son, Stephen (Karen) Baynes of Kissimmee, Fla; sisters, Clara Shelby of Mount Vernon, Ind., Ruth Ansbury of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; grandchildren, Katie Williams, Mandy Williams, Heather Williams and Tara Williams; nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday (Sept. 18, 2006) in First Friends Meeting, 2010 Chester Blvd., Richmond. Doug Gwyn will officiate. Friends may call on Monday (Sept. 18, 2006) from 1-3 p.m. at the church. Burial will be at noon on Tuesday (Sept. 19, 2006) in the Highland Friends Cemetery in Salem, Ind.
