Linda Darlene (Smallwood) Neel, 67, of Fairmont, passed away Sunday (March 23, 2014) at her home surrounded by her loving family, heavenly angels and church bells ringing. She was born in Fairmont on Aug. 7, 1946, a daughter of the late George William Smallwood Sr. and Aleatha Mae (Wolfe) Smallwood.

She married the love of her life, Stephen C. Neel, and devoted her life to him until his passing in 1997.

"What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash."

Linda lived her life full of life, love and amazing strength. Her entire life was centered around her husband, children, grandchildren, family and any person in need. She spent her years from 1964 to 1985 devoted to her husband and caring and nurturing her children. She had amazing strength and faith in these years.

After 1985, her family grew and she continued devoting her energy, love and time to them. During this time she also worked at Heck's Department Store and Shoney's Restaurant, where she was known as many by "the sweetest lady." After her husband's passing in 1997, still devoting her life to her children and grandchildren, she also helped organize and operate Country Connections. This was a journey she took with her daughter, Stephanie, and her daughter by heart, Debby Corbin. She worked every day for the first years while still managing to make time for her family, sitting in the yard watching the flowers grow, grandchildren playing and waving at every neighbor who went by. She treated every client and caller just as she did her family. She became a second mom to some, a grandma to others and became best known as "Miss Linda."

She retired in 2012 as it was time for her to begin using her strength to complete her life. She spent the remaining years battling cancer while maintaining the strength, faith and love to comfort her family and never once putting herself first. This is how she lived her dash.

She is survived by her only son, Stephen "Joe" Neel and his wife Anita of Grafton; her youngest daughter, Alice "Lea" Kisner of Fairmont; and her oldest daughter, Stephanie Abel and her husband Ray of Fairmont. She was known as "Mamaw" by her grandchildren, Holly and Brian Abel, Buddy Joe "BJ" Bartholow, Jasmin Ocasio and Amanda Barnett, all of Fairmont. She was known as "Pink Grandma" by her great-grandchildren, Baileigh, Kyler, Micah, Jayson and Emma.

Also surviving are two brothers, Aaron Bradley Smallwood and his wife Lori of Kernersville, N.C., and Vaughn Janes Smallwood of Kansas City, Mo.; her nephew, Brad Smallwood of Kernersville, N.C.; a greatnephew, Zack Smallwood of Kernersville, N.C.; two sisters-inlaw, Bonnie Smallwood of Colfax, and Mary Alice Compton and her husband Sonny of Catawba; an uncle, Jerald Wolfe of Middleberg Heights, Ohio, who held a very special place in her heart; and a cousin, who she made known as her "Sister by Heart," Ann Dean and her husbandWayne ofMillersville.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, George W. "Grumpy" Smallwood Jr.; a sister, Phyllis and her husband Jerry Neel Sr.; an aunt, Geneva and her husband Oscar Martin; three brothers-in-law, Jimmy Neel, Eddie Neel and Mike Neel; and two nephews, Jerry Neel Jr. and JoeyNeel.

Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 1-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 10-11 a.m. Thursday. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Thursday with Pastor Rex Musgrove officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery in Fairmont.
