Mayford Magnus "Maizie" Engstrom, 90, of Rockford, entered his Heavenly home Sunday, March 23, 2014, in SwedishAmerican Hospital after a short illness.

Born Sept. 21, 1923, in Princeton, Minn.; the son of Otto and Delphia (Sederberg) Engstrom. He moved to Rockford as a teenager and soon met Pearl M. Erickson. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944 and faithfully served in the Pacific until 1946 when he returned and married Pearl. They enjoyed 67 wonderful years together until she passed away in October 2013.

Maizie spent the majority of his work life as a gas service technician for Nicor, repairing stoves and furnaces all over Rockford for 38 years.

Along with his wife, he was a founding member of Broadway Covenant Church where he served as church chairman, trustee, board member, and in many other ways.

Maizie loved spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed traveling, camping trips in the early years and spending time at the beach and in D.C. in more recent years, watching baseball and basketball, a game of golf anytime, strawberries in any form, and a good Swedish joke. He deeply loved and was devoted to his family who miss him already.

He is survived by his daughters, Kathryn Engstrom and Carol (Robert) Larson; grandchildren, Erick and Emily Larson; sister-in-law, Corinne Hubbell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Pearl; parents; brothers, Ernest and John; and sisters, Mabel, Violet, and Frances.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2014, in Broadway Covenant Church, 3525 Broadway, with Pastor Mike Mirakian officiating. Burial in Scandinavian Cemetery.
