Skull Fracture
Causes Death
Of Magna Man

Officers Lay
To Hard Fall

Dewey Walter Bird, 41, of Magna, died early Thursday at Salt Lake General hospital of a skull fracture which investigating officers said probably was caused by a fall on the morning of November 17.

Mr. Bird, the father of nine children, was taken to the hospital that day after being found by a workman in a vacant lot near Center and First South streets in Magna.

Dr. George N. Curtis, hospital superintendent, said the man had been only somewhat irrational until two days ago, when he lapsed into a deep coma which gave physicians their first indication that he had a brain injury.

When found lying in the vacant lot, Mr. Bird was taken first to a private home and then to the sheriff's office in Magna. After being examined by a doctor, he was ordered to the hospital, but the reason for his condition was not known at that time.

A post mortem conducted Thursday afternoon by Dr. Orin A. Ogilvie, clinical pathologist, showed a fracture of the skull behind the right ear and extending toward the back of the skull. The fracture could have been caused either by a blow with a "blunt instrument or a fall against a hard object," it was reported.

Chief Deputy Sheriff George Beckstead and Deputy N. F. Pehrsen of Magna, who investigated the case, said it was unlikely that Bird had been attacked. They theorized, instead, that he fell and struck his head against a building or the sidewalk.

During the brief intervals when he was rational, Mr. Bird was unable to tell hospital attendants how he came to be injured, they said.

Magna Death Listed
As Traffic Fatality

The death of Dewey Walter Bird, 41, of Magna, on November 17, was classified as a traffic fatality Thursday by J. E. Scheib, chief county traffic deputy. Mr. Scheib said he would so recommend to the state tax commission.

Mr. Bird was found unconscious in a vacant lot in Magna and died November 30 in a Salt Lake hosPital. Subsequent investigation showed he had been riding on the running board of a friend's car and apparently fell off as it rounded a sharp turn near the spot he was found.

Mr. Bird's death was the twenty-second traffic fatality in Salt Lake county this year.
