Bennie Newton, 89, of 4178 N.C. 91, Wilson, passed away Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at his residence. A celebration of his life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Wilson Chapel FWB Church, 513 Barnes St. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

A public viewing will be held today from 2 to 6 p.m. at Hamilton Funeral Chapel of Wilson. All other times, the family will receive friends at the residence where they will assemble one hour prior to the funeral service in preparation for the funeral procession.

Bennie Newton was the son of the late John and Bessie Newton. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Alma Marie Anderson Newton; and a grandson, Eric Lature Newton.

He was educated in the Wilson County School system. In addition to working the soil as a farmer and being a prized gardener, he was drafted into the United States Army at the age of 19 and served in World War II in the 33rd Field Artillery as a military policeman. During his tenure in the army, his tour of duty included France, Italy and Germany. He received a Good Conduct Medal and was highly admired for his accurate shooting skills. In his later years as a passionate gardener, he was known as the "collard greens man" because of the bountiful crop of fresh fruits and vegetables he harvested each spring and fall.

Precious memories of his legacy are shared by his five children; Phyllis Ann Newton, Delois Ward (James), Bennie Newton Jr., Donnie Ray Newton (Gwendolyn), all of Wilson and LaVerne Newton of Greensboro; three grandchildren, Hope LaTanya Newton of Fort Washington, Md., Starrish Rochelle Newton of Waldorf, Md., and Shaketia Joyner of Wilson; four great-grandchildren, T'Myia and Sameah of Waldorf, Md., and Semaj and Paris, both of Wilson; two brothers, Harvey L. Newton (Bea) and Joseph Newton (Penney), all of Wilson; five sisters, Ada Beatrice McCoy of Nashua, N.H., Mattie Taylor (John Wesley) of Wilson, Geraldine Fletcher of Newark, Del., Ernestine Moore (Bernard) of El Paso, Texas, and Pastor Mary Christine Newton of Fort Washington, Md.; several nieces, nephews; cousins; and a host of other relatives and friends.
