James was an only child born in 1844 to Joseph and Mary Bridges Bedford. On June 6, 1862 James enlisted in Company F, 56th North Carolina Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia as a private. Died during U.S. Grant's Overland Campaign. While the only battle on that date involved cavalry units, James could have died in the duel with Sheridan's Cavalry Corps when they attempted to take their supply train at the Battle of St. Mary's Church or of wounds received in one of the many battles leading up to that date or died from disease.
