Sister Teresa Reeves, OP, of Dominican Convent, Sparkill, New York, died on, March 3, 2014 in Siena Hall, Sparkill, NY. Born in New York City on April 15, 1932, Teresa was the daughter of John and Teresa Dougherty Reeves. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1951 and received the name Sister M. John Teresa, professing her first vows in 1953 and her final vows in 1958.
Sister Teresa earned a BS in Education from Fordham University, Bronx, NY; an MA in Latin from St. John's University, Jamaica, NY; a Certificate in Administration from NY University, New York, NY; and an MA in Family Counseling from Iona College, New Rochelle, NY. Sister was an elementary and high school teacher, principal and counselor. She ministered in the Archdiocese of New York and the Diocese of Brooklyn. She taught at St. Helena, Bronx, NY (1953-55); St. Catherine of Siena, New York, NY (1955-58); St. Mary Magdalen, Springfield Gardens, NY (1958-60); Aquinas HS, Bronx, NY (1960-64 & 1985-96); Cathedral HS, New York, NY (1967-68); principal at St. Anthony, Nanuet (1968-74); and St. Gabriel HS, New Rochelle, NY (1982-85). From 1974-1978 Sister Teresa did research work for the Archdiocesan Council of Women Religious (Bronx) and the Catholic Center (New York). She was Placement Director at Dominican Convent, Sparkill, NY from 1978-82 and Family/Marriage Counselor (1996-2002) at the Catholic Charities Center in Haverstraw, NY. Sister Teresa retired in 2003 and became a resident in Siena Hall in 2012.
Sister Teresa is survived by her sister, Sr. Cecilia Reeves, SC, Yonkers, NY, her nieces, Maureen Van Hoesen, Greenwich, CT, and Tara Hull, Mahwah, NJ, and her nephews, Raymond Hull, Ft. Lauderdale, FL and John Hull, Westwood, NJ.
We will remember Sister Teresa for her commitment and dedication in the field of education. She was an excellent teacher and principal. She had a great sense of humor and never lost sight of the gift of laughter. She served her congregation faithfully for sixty-two years and we are grateful for the time she spent among us. She was gift to us and now we commend her to the God whom she loved. We ask the good Lord to give her peace among the company of the saints in heaven.
