US Congressman, Civil War Union Army Officer. The United States District Attorney for Rhode Island from 1853 to 1861, he was elected to represent Rhode Island's 2nd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, he served from 1861 to 1863. During his term in office he volunteered for the Union Army, and was commissioned as Colonel and commander of the 12th Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry on September 18, 1862. He led his unit at the December 13, 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg, where it fought in a railroad cut and received heavy fire throughout the day. When the fighting was over and the Union Army retreated in defeat, George H. Browne's command had lost 109 men killed or wounded. In the Spring of 1863 he commanded his regiment as it was detailed to Kentucky, where it saw action against the raiders of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan's guerrilla command. He was was honorably mustered out on July 29, 1862 when his term of enlistment ended. After the war be resumed his law career, and served in the Rhode Island State Senate from 1872 to 1873.
