James Cook Snipes, Sr. was the older of two children born to Joseph Harvey Snipes and his first wife, Beulah Hartwell Cook. Known to his family as "Jamie," he was raised by his father and his father's second wife, Fannie Arava Morriss. Jamie had a younger half sister named Lucile Snipes, and two younger half brothers named Morris Snipes and Abner Snipes.

James Cook Snipes and his first wife, Emma Louise Brock, were married in Macon, Missouri on July 20, 1916. They had three children: "Jack," Jean and Robert. He worked in the cotton business which took him briefly to France.
