Richard J. "Dick" McDermott, 84, of Mexico, died Saturday at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Lysander, son of the late Ambrose E. and Florence Thompson McDermott. He served in the Navy from 1948 to 1970. He was a math teacher at Mexico Academy Central School, retiring in 1989. Dick was instrumental in developing the computer and computer training curriculums at Mexico Academy Central Schools. He was a member of the Mexico Lions Club. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, the former Inez Howard; one son, Richard (Annmarie) McDermott II of Pulaski; three daughters, Sandra (Thomas) Crandall of Walworth, NY, Barbara (James) LaVoie of Saratoga Springs, Frances (Thomas) Wheat of Mexico; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Mulvihill of Birmingham, Michigan. Spring graveside services with full military honors will be in New Haven Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Monday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. from the Harter Funeral Home, 9 Washington Ave., Mexico, NY. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Oswego County Hospice, P.O. Box 102, Oswego, NY 13216.
