Grace had always planned to be a teacher and enrolled in the teacher's training course of study the last two years of High School, graduating at the time of the "Great Depression".
She taught three years in the rural schools of Silver Shade, Pleasant Hope, and Good Hope, while going to summer school and one full year at Southwest Missouri State. She was now qualified to teach in the primary grades.
An Aunt and Uncle, George and Inis Hibbard of Medicine Lodge, informed Grace of a vacancy in the primary school. She was hired as a first grade teacher in 1936. She liked living with her aunt and uncle, liked Medicine Lodge, and teaching the first graders. She didn't like the terrible dust storms and didn't plan to stay very long in Kansas. However, she met Ray Sheldon, a Kansas native, who changed her mind. They were married, June 25, 1939 in the George Hibbard home. At that time, Medicine Lodge did not hire married women, so her teaching career ended.
Their first child, Rae Ann, was born April 29, 1941. Their happiness turned to grief at her sudden death four months later. Four more children were born to Ray and Grace, Jana, John, and identical twins, Miles and Mark. When Ray died in 2004, they had shared 65 wonderful years together in the home Ray and his father Ralph had built.
Grace loved to refinish old walnut furniture. Her long walnut table was labor of love. She gathered family and friends around this table on many occasions, sharing her love and devotion to us all. She was gracious to the end of her life; she was Grace.
Grace was a member of the United Methodist Church, and had been active in the United Methodist Women. She also belonged to P.E.O., and the Self-Culture Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Halie Hibbard, a daughter Rae Ann Sheldon, her husband Ray Sheldon, a sister Elsie Hibbard, and a brother Glenn Hibbard.
Survivors include her four children, Jana (Gary) Weiss, Powell, WY; John (Patricia) Sheldon, Guthrie, OK; Miles (Linda) Sheldon, Medicine Lodge, KS; Mark (Jan) Sheldon, McPherson, KS; a sister Susan Martin, Concordia, KS; 8 Grandchildren, 6 Great-Grandchildren, 3 Great-Great-Grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
