Spencer Akers died Thursday night at Brooke Army Medical Center near San Antonio, Texas. Akers had been serving in Iraq since June with a Saginaw based National Guard infantry unit. He had volunteered to go overseas with Company B so that married members of the unit could remain at home. He served in the U.S. Army in addition to the Army Reserves. He volunteered to serve in Operation Desert Storm and also provided security for the Ambassador Bridge and Windsor Tunnel following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. He died as a result of burns and wounds suffered in a landmine explosion in Iraq on November 21. He is survived by his parents, Don and Carole Akers of Tustin; sister, Jeannine (Randy) Robertson, and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. He will be buried with full military honors.
