Roman Catholic Cardinal. Born in Marta near Montefiascone to a noble family, Camillo Tarquini entered seminary in Montefiascone, later moving to Rome, obtaining a doctorate in canon law. Ordained priest in September 1833, he entered the Society of Jesus on August 27, 1837, having already served as a lawyer at the Sacred Congregation of the Tridentine Council. Following his entry with the Society, upon completing his novitiate he started lecturing human letters and rhetoric at the Jesuit schools in Fano, Modena, Piacenza, Fermo, Tivoli and Verona. Ten years later, he was appointed professor of canon law at Collegio Romano where he remained until 1868, being present again between 1871 and 1873. Contributor to Jesuit journal "La Civiltà Cattolica", Tarquini was a distinguished member of the Pontifical Roman Academy of Archaeology, of the Imperial and Royal Academy of Science of Lucca and president of the historical and archaeological sections of the Accademia de' Quiriti. Consultor of the Sacred Congregations of the Inquisition, Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs, Propaganda Fide and of the Bishops and Regulars, Pope Pius IX named him pontifical theologian for the First Vatican Council and later theologian of the Sacred Apostolic Penitentiary. This world renowned canonist and archaeologist, who proved to be an eminent theologian, publishing numerous works regarding the named matters, was above all a deeply pious man, who only accepted his cardinalitial nomination through religious obedience: Pope Pius IX elevated him to the Sacred College in the consistory of December 22, 1873, receiving the deaconry of San Nicola in Carcere the following month. Less than two months following his elevation, Tarquini breathed his last in Rome; never accepting to be photographed in life, the only image in existence of his was taken shortly after his death, featuring him wearing a cassock trimmed in cardinalatial scarlet and the red biretta.
