James A. May was the son of William V. May and Sarah "Sary" __________ (There is absolutely no evidence that Sarah's maiden name is Wright, if evidence can be found, I will add her maiden name, until then I will not). He married Zerelda May, daughter of Bennett May & Nancy Gibson on August 8, 1845 in Owen County, Kentucky by Hugh Montgomery.


Children of James A. May & Zerelda May were:

● 1. Mary J. Mary born 1846 in Owen Co, KY.

● 2. Dudley May born 1850 in Owen Co, KY and died 14 June 1900 in Henry Co, KY.

● 3. John V. May born 1852 in Owen Co, KY.

● 4. Simon Peter May born 20 February 1855 in Owen Co, KY and died 30 January 1913 in Madison, Jefferson Co, IN. He married Mary Elizabeth Barker.

● 5. Hester Annie May born 1 June 1857 in Owen Co, KY and died 1 July 1857 in Owen Co, KY.

● 6. James May born 25 March 1860 in Owen Co, KY and died 14 February 1922 in Frankfort, Franklin Co, KY.


These were their ONLY children.


James appears in the following in Owen County, KY: Tax Lists: 1834, 1835, 1836, 1837, 1840, 1841, 1842, 1843, 1844, 1850, 1851, 1852, 1853, 1854, & 1856. (Several of the other tax lists are missing totally).


They are in the following census records: 1840 Owen Co, KY-(James is living alone); 1850 Owen Co, KY-pg. 258A; 1860 Owen Co, KY-pg. 246.


In 1850 James A. & Zerelda May had two nephews, J. Henry May and William Bramwell May living with them, who were the sons of John Connelly & Nancy May. J. Henry May died in 1854, his father John Connelly May died in 1844. These were NOT James A. & Zerelda's children, William Bramwell May was still living with them in 1860, as was his mother. By 1870 James and his mother were living in their own home and were still living there in 1880, around the area known as Dallasburg. William Bramwell May died in Grayson, Carter County, Kentucky on 29 May 1911, he never married).


In 1860, living directly next door to James A. & Zerelda May, was Simon Peter May's widow, Sarah Ann (McDaniel) May McCoy and her second husband, Malachi McCoy along with children: (1) Sarah May, age 15; (2) John M. May, age 13; (3) Nancy May, age 8; (4) Willis McCoy, age 4.
