Malinda was the daughter of William Combs and his wife Sarah, the third family to settle in Riley Township, Vigo County, Indiana and build a home.

On May 7, 1829 she married Elijah Dean in Vigo Co., IN.

In the 1830 census they are listed as having one child, a daughter under 10 years old (Lavisia Dean Latta).

In 1840 they they have one daughter 10-15, one son 5-10 and one son and daughter both under 5.

By 1850 they have six children living with them: William 18, Sarah 16, Robert 13, Abner 10, Dalmicia 5, and Mary (Emily) 4 months. Lavisia their eldest child had married Abram Latty (Latta) on Dec 2, 1849.

On Oct 8, 1868 she received an Army Mothers Pension due to the death of her son Abner, who died in the Civil War while serving in the 11th Indiana Cavalry. He is buried in the Chattanooga National Cemetery in Chattanooga, TN.

In the 1870 census of Vigo County she is listed as 60 years old, born in KY, living with her husband Elijah 64 and their daughter Anna A. 16.

In the 1880 census Of Vigo County, she is listed as Malinda Dean age 68 born in Kentucky, both parents born in Kentucky, and she was living with her son Robert and his family in Lost Creek Township. Vigo County.
