Stancel M. Riley, Sr., 93, died Wednesday, March 19, at his home in Concord.

He was married to Gladys Payne Riley, who died Tuesday at home.

They had one son, Stancel M. Riley, Jr.

Mr. Riley graduated from Hueytown High School in 1938 and from Alverson-Draughn Business School in 1939.

He served in the US Army Air Corp during WWII.

Returning home he became the bookkeeper in the commissary at Woodward Iron Company where he worked until his retirement in 1985. He then became a mail carrier for Route 5, just like his father and grandfather.

Mr. And Mrs. Riley married June 19, 1943 and attended Earnest United Methodist Church where they were treasured by the community.

Mr. Riley is survived by his son, Stancel M. Riley, Jr and four grandchildren: Stancel Riley, III of Charlotte, NC, Richard Riley of Birmingham, Tonja Bridges of Atlanta, and Hilary Foreman of Portland, OR and 13 great grandchildren.

The visitation will be Saturday, March 22, 2014 from 1-2 pm at Peoples Chapel Funeral Home in Hueytown. The funeral service for Mr. And Mrs. Riley will be at 2 pm, with Dr. Andy Wolfe and Reverend Marian New officiating. Burial will be at Earnest United Methodist Church where a reception honoring their lives will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Earnest Methodist Church in the names of Stancel M. Riley and Gladys Payne Riley.
