James Cefus "J.C." McRae 98 of Mt. Gilead passed away Saturday Morning, March 22, 2014 at Stanly Regional Medical Center in Albemarle.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Monday, March 24, 2014 at Zion United Methodist Church. Rev. Lee Edwards will officiate and interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 Sunday evening at Edwards Funeral Home in Mt. Gilead.

Mr. McRae was born June 29, 1915 in Montgomery County. He was a son of the late Jim and Maggie Smith McRae.

He had a passion for building and was a building contractor having formerly owned J C McRae Company and was especially proud of the many churches he built. He was a WWII Army Veteran and a member of Zion United Methodist Church, and was a former member of the board of Directors and Montgomery Community College and Southern National Bank.

He will be remembered as a loving Father and Grandfather and a lifelong and highly respected member of the Pee Dee Community of Mt. Gilead. Even in his advanced years he remained active and enjoyed building furniture, writing and entertaining.

He is survived by his children, Stimpson McRae and wife Doris and Teddy McRae and wife Pat all of Mt. Gilead, Jane McRae Smith and husband Grady of Lumberton and Cefus McRae and wife Beth of Norcross, Georgia. One brother, Finley McRae of Mt. Gilead. Seven Grandchildren, Six Great Grandchildren and Four Great-Great Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kate, son Steven, brothers, Phillip, Branson and Michael, and Sister Nettie McRae.
