Emily sometimes used the names Emma or Mary. Daughter of Thomas Hodgkiss & Eve Lively Hodgkiss of Illinois.

Emma married Joseph Judnitz from Austria in 1863 in Jackson County, IL. Emma & Joseph changed the spelling of their last name to Utnage/Utenage sometime in the 1870s. However, they used both last names for different things during the 1870s & 1880s. By the 1890s, they stuck with Utnage.

Joseph Utnage died 09 July 1878 and was buried on the farm they owned at the time. Their daugther, Maria was born 22 Feb 1868 and died before the 1870 census was taken. Marie was their second child. All of their other children were boys. Their son, Frank Utnage, was killed in a powder plant explosion in Fayville, IL on 12 Mar 1914. Frank was engaged to be married at that time.

The original given names of the children of Emma and Joseph Judnitz/Utnage are: Joseph C., Maria, Wilchem Fidelis & Franciskus Bernard (twins), Johan B., and Gregor Herman. The youngest 4 were born in Missouri.

After Joseph Judnitz/Utnage died, Emma married William Ashley on 2 Aug 1885. They had 2 children, one of them was Emily Ashley (born: 11 Oct 1886 & died: 15 Oct 1888).

Emma's grave is unmarked.
