Lois Marie Smiley Fields, 96, of Bentleyville, died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, in Allegheny General Hospital.
She was born March 2, 1917, in Bentleyville, a daughter of the late Russell and Garnet Greenlee Smiley.
Mrs. Fields was a 1933 graduate of Bentleyville High School, and in 1933 she attended California Normal School for two years attaining a certificate to teach school. She began her teaching career at Bryant's School in Eighty Four, also teaching at Ginger Hill School, Somerset Township Consolidated and Henry's School. Mrs. Fields earned her bachelor of science degree in Elementary Education in 1960 from California State College. In the fall of 1960 she returned to Ginger Hill School to teach first grade for 19 years until her retirement in 1979. She joined the Bentleyville United Methodist Church in 1936 and taught various youth and adult Sunday school classes. Mrs. Fields had been a member of the Commission on Education and was involved in the Council on Ministries, the Administrative Board and the United Methodist Women, being very active in the local church as well as on a District level.
Mrs. Fields enjoyed her family, cooking, baking, sewing, doing crossword puzzles, playing scrabble and raising African Violets.
Surviving are four sons, Howard R. (Pamela Bombalek) of Charleroi, Gary D. (Kay Campbell) of Amarillo, Texas, Craig E. (Dawn Street) and Loren E. (Rachel Alderfer) both of Bentleyville; nine grandchildren, Heather, Renee, Stephanie, Ryan Fields, Karen, Sarah, Ryan Kearns, Trevor and Kayla; four great-grandchildren, Jenna Marie, Thomas, Alex and Camryn; eight nieces and nephews, J. Martin Smiley, Terry L. Smiley, Elaine Dennick King, Shirley Dennick Zalar, William H. Dennick, Jeffrey W. Fields, Tracy L. Fields, Lisa Fields Milton; and many great, great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews.
On Nov. 21, 1941, she married Dwight Johnston Fields who died Dec. 10, 1989. Deceased in addition to her husband are her brother, Duane Smiley; and daughter-in-law, Darlene Ross Fields.
Interment will be in Maple Creek Cemetery
